In my first post-secondary history course, my professor taught me about the “tools of a historian – empathy and imagination”. This philosophy stuck with me and is something that I was to instil in my future class, especially in the humanities sector. The principle behind these tools is that history is an incomplete retelling of the past, where one, wether in favour of or against the actions of the past, must critically analyze history with a sense of empathy to open their thinking as to why these events took place. Likewise, one must draw out their imagination to fill the gaps of history and to place themselves in the period.
